Feed Your Skin: The Food Your Skin Needs

Great skin isn’t only about the products you use. It’s a function of your genes, and also your diet. In fact, research shows that what you eat has a huge impact on the state of your skin. Food can be toxic or healing to your skin, depending on the choices that you make concerning your eating habits.

Keeping your skin young and healthy, or prematurely speeding up the ageing process, has a lot to do with what you eat, so here’s a taste of what works, and what doesn’t!

Eat more:

Sukuma Wiki – this modest vegetable packs a not so modest punch! Full of Vitamin C and A, which are essential in firming up and keeping skin firm, fall in love with your skin, by adding sukuma frequently to your meals or vegetable juices.

Coconut water – this is a firm favorite. Not to be confused with coconut oil derived from the meat of the coconut, this clear water is best enjoyed from the madafu that you will find being sold by many mkokoteni vendors. It contains more levels of potassium than a banana. It has less calories too and many swear upon its acne fighting benefits.

Beef – To keep skin wrinkle-free, choose lean portions of beef which contain rich amounts of protein which is essential for collagen in your skin. Collagen together with elastin keep your skin supple and wrinkle-free.

Eat less:

Sugar – present in candy and sweet treats, sugar has been faulted as the culprit behind adult acne, premature ageing and wrinkling of skin. It affects and breaks down collagen and elastin, which then ages the skin faster.

Processed foods and refined carbohydrates – a diet rich in fast foods is also associated with adult acne, and the premature ageing of the skin. These foods contain little, or no amount of fibre, which is vital for a healthy body and healthy skin. Fibre affects the digestive process, and affects blood sugar levels. Constant exposure to stressed and elevated sugar levels in the blood, breaks down collagen, which negatively impacts on the skin.

Alcohol – A glass or two wine is often recommended, however binge drinking, and the frequent consumption of drinks with a high alcoholic percentage, can result in premature ageing of your skin. Alcohol is a diuretic, which means the more you drink, the more dehydrated you become. Water is essential for plump, fresh looking skin, and a night out always results in dry, tired looking skin. Fine lines and wrinkles even seem bigger when one has a hangover. If you must have a drink, hydrate frequently, and stick to recommended alcohol guidelines!

Start feeding your body with the nutrients it needs and it will in turn provide you with fresh, flawless skin!
